This learning resource has been designed to support the Basic Surgical Skills course run by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. These resources should be used before, during and after the practical skills course.

The course aims to provide a realistic and supportive learning environment in which surgical trainees can rehearse basic technical skills. During the practical training sessions, tutors will provide guidance and feedback to the attendees. There will be a series of formative assessments which are designed to support skills acquisition and will be similar to the assessment format used in the Intercollegiate Surgical Training Curriculum.

This learning resource has been designed to support the Future Surgeons: Key Skills course run by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. These resources should be used before, during and after the practical skills course.

This course is designed to introduce basic techniques in surgical practice. It is easier to learn basic surgical skills at an early stage of one’s career than to unlearn bad habits acquired. The course aims to introduce safe basic surgical techniques that are common to all surgical specialities.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, in collaboration with the David Nott Foundation (DNF), are delivering the HEST-UK (Hostile Environment Surgical Training, United Kingdom) course directed by Professor David Nott and the DNF Faculty Team.

This interactive five-day course will provide participants with an understanding of the decision-making strategies that have proven effective in surgical settings in austere conditions. By the end of the course, you will be ready to work in a humanitarian crisis, providing emergency surgical care to populations exposed to or recovering from the health consequences of conflict and catastrophe.

The course content covers cases associated with conflict and catastrophe, particularly penetrating and crush injuries as well as the management of trauma of the limbs, head, thorax, and torso. A further focus is on post-disaster/conflict procedures including skin flaps and grafts, and the management of orthopaedic fractures using external fixation and traction. One day of the course also deals with the decision-making and management of obstetric emergencies including post-partum haemorrhage and caesarean section.

Team Based Quality Reviews or TBQR is a generic term for traditional multi-professional team learning activities such as mortality and morbidity meetings (M&M) or significant event analysis reviews, which typically take place routinely across all surgical specialities and healthcare sectors. TBQR process refers to a wider activity that starts at the point of an 'event' through to the shared learning gained, action agreed and monitoring for the purpose of improvements where needed. This includes identifying and addressing unintended consequences of actions taken.

The aim of this course is to develop a surgical workforce that is equipped in concepts of safety and quality reviews, using updated safety science. The course has been designed to complement existing policies and frameworks on safety reviews and will be relevant to anyone working in a surgical setting.

There are two components to this course, as follows:

  1. A one-hour online training module which supports the learner in their understanding of the TBQR process, its underlying principles and provides an overview of designing quality and safety review pathways.
  2. A one-day face-to-face workshop which involves interactive lectures on core topics relevant to safety reviews and practical work.
